A Platform for the People: Alexander King and BMill Use Clubhouse To Level The Playing Field For Musicians
By Kimberly Henry, Staff Writer UNSUGARCOATED Media
Before COVID brought the world to an unprecedented halt, chart-topping musician, Alexander King, had been on a relentless concert tour across America with his longtime friend and tour manager, BMill. But when the pandemic shut down the live music scene, King and BMill had to pivot and create opportunity out of this sudden, industry-wide catastrophe.
In a recent episode of UNSUGARCOATED with Aalia, host Aalia Lanius sat down with producer and songwriter, King and BMill. The music and business duo tell Aalia how they have been making a splash on the new social media platform, Clubhouse, and about their work with 6 time Grammy award-winning producer, Jim Jonsin.
In a conversation all about art and impact, Aalia asks how creative collabs like The 808 Farm and platforms like Clubhouse can bring music—as well as artists’ passion for creating social change—directly to the people.
Although the pandemic closed the door on King’s tour, it also presented King and BMill with the opportunity to focus on the construction of The 808 Farm studios in Nashville.
The 808 Farm is a music production center led by Grammy nominated producer, Jim Jonsin, who’s worked with artists like Beyoncé, Eminem and Usher, in addition to King. Not only does King produce his own music on the 31+ acre artist’s playground, he collaborates on smash hits with artists including rising star, Austin Mahone.
But King and BMill have long been looking for more ways to spread their music and message, and they found it on Clubhouse, the social platform popular with creatives and celebrities, including Swizz, Meek Mill, Elon Musk and Tiffany Haddish, to name a few.
King wasn’t always the biggest fan of social media, especially the toxic environment it can create. King explained that he had actually been on a long social media hiatus.
“Much of the energy on social media platforms were arbitrary, and everything felt like an argument,” he said, sadly.
But Clubhouse ended that hiatus, and made the pair wonder, how could they use social media to connect with and mentor up-and-coming artists?
One way was through King and BMill’s Clubhouse “pirate radio station,” The Talent Tap In. Through the competion, King and BMill help young artists hone their skills, grow their fan base, and even support their careers by giving them the opportunity to win $5,000 cash prizes!
King and BMill see in Clubhouse an opportunity for artists to cut out the restrictive influence of major studios and connect directly with their listeners. Platforms like Clubhouse, King says, can give artists more visibility and freedom to express themselves—not only in their creative work, but in their social passions as well.
This isn’t the first time the duo used social media to create change. As the George Floyd protests intensified in the hot summer months of 2020, King and BMill raised 45,000 dollars for Floyd’s family by collaborating on a T-Shirt with pioneering fashion designer and rapper, Yelawolf, and grandson of country music superstar, Struggle Jennings.
As the pair dive deeper into the world of Clubhouse, can they recreate this scale of social impact?
You won’t want to miss hearing how the pandemic showed this music duo the silver lining, helping them forge deeper connections with their fans, their art, and even their families. To hear more from Alexander King, BMill and Aalia’s candid conversation about how Music & Social Impact Collide on Clubhouse.
