“If you really wanna connect with people, it’s not about us… it’s about [wanting] to make an impact, not impress.”

Despite the essential role communication plays in our lives, we tend to overlook just how important it is. But the last year of political polarization, rising tensions, and social isolation left some of us in desperate need of a communication refresher.
Lucky for us, communication expert and neuroscientist Dr. Grace Lee, drops in on episode 52 of UNSUGARCOATED with Aalia, to reveal how mastering communication can push you forward in your personal and professional life.
Lee’s path to a successful career as a business consultant and in-demand public speaker was no walk in the park. She learned the importance of communication and connection after a tragic accident left her orphaned and alone at 11 years old. Even after she was adopted, Lee struggled to trust again let alone communicate her inner feelings and aspirations. But the compassion of her adopted family and their emphasis on committing acts of kindness helped her reconnect and realize the value of helping others.
That lesson stuck with Lee and guided her as started her career in consulting. Throughout her conversation with Aalia, Lee reveals how changing the way we speak can lead to not only greater understanding but a greater chance of achieving our goals.
How do we change the way we speak? Lee reveals different methods of improving our communication skills, including how to avoid the pitfalls of misrepresenting ourselves.
“If you really wanna connect with people, it’s not about us… it’s about [wanting] to make an impact, not impress.”
But in a world with so many problems, why does how we speak really matter? Lee believes that learning to communicate emotionally and effectively is the key to having more meaningful conversations. And that learning takes time and practice according to Lee.
“You don’t always have the time to prepare your talking points,” Said Dr. Grace, “because most of the time, our conversations and communication pieces are in the moment.”
In this touching conversation about how trauma can stunt our ability to communicate and how to rebuild those skills, Aalia and Lee make a lifetime of lessons easy to apply to our own speech. To hear more, listen to the entire conversation below.
